No, you do not need to be pro to change shocks. You have to have some pro tools though: Torque wrench, spring compressors, tool box, Deep creep if you having problems with rusted bolts...

Actually your Camry has struts but many people refer to them as shocks. Struts are used instead of shocks because they are more effiecient and last longer.
Buy a Haynes shop manual for 1997-2001 Toyota Camrys. They're about $15.

Doesn;t have shocks. It has struts. Job best left to a professional. Serious injury can occur if not done correctly. I changed all four STRUTS on my Camry. I rented a spring clamp from a local parts dealer and just followed instructions in the workshop manual. It took quite a while doing it by myself but I did manage
