A quarterback was a scottish Rugby term to describe a players position in a formation, a player positioned roughly 1/4 closer to the line than the fullback (or 1/4 way between the line and FB) Halfback also was named this way, interestingly enough, there was even a 5/8th back, Before metric I guess.The name has stuck, though I wonder who the best 5/8ths back in NFL or Ncaa history was?? probably a short stocky fella
