A quarterback was a scottish Rugby term to describe a players position in a formation, a player positioned roughly 1/4 closer to the line than the fullback (or 1/4 way between the line and FB) Halfback also was named this way, interestingly enough, there was even a 5/8th back, Before metric I guess. The name has stuck, though I wonder who the best 5/8ths back in NFL or Ncaa history was?? probably a short stocky fella
they where named because of a myth that says that a Quarter Horse can run over a quarter mile without getting tired.
Quarter horses are named that because they can run a Quarter of a mile really fast. They had races in the old days for a quarter of a mile and they would use Quarter horses for them. Now Quarter Horses aren't as popular for racing, because Thoroughbreds have better stamina.

That depends on a couple of factors. 1) If the 3rd string QB is one of the players named to the 45 player game day roster, there are no restrictions concerning when he may play and whether the 1st and 2nd stringers cannot play if he does play. 2) If the 3rd string QB is named the 'emergency' quarterback, he is considered the 46th active player for the game. Basically, he is dressed in case of an emergency situation should the first two QBs get injured. If he enters the game prior to the 4th quarter, neither the 1st nor 2nd string QBs are allowed back in the game. If he enters the game in the 4th quarter, both the 1st or 2nd string QB may reenter the game.
