In most ant species there are actually two members of the colony that are able to fly. These ants appear once a year and do so at the same time. The larger ant is a "Princess" which is destined to become a "Queen" after successfully completing her nuptial flight. The smaller ant is a "Drone" and is the only male ant produced in the colony. The Princesses and the Drones take flight at the same time and normally in close proximity to the time when other colonies of the same species are also experiencing their nuptial flights. The Drone and the Princess mate during flight and the Drone dies soon after the nuptial flight is ended. The Princess returns to the ground and seeks out a sheltered place where she can start a new colony. Since she will never fly again, the Princess removes her wings. She begins to lay eggs, and in doing so she becomes a Queen. The new Queen feeds and cares for her first offspring herself. She does so until they mature, at which time they take over the care of their Queen. Once her first offspring begin caring for the Queen, she concentrates solely on laying eggs for the rest of her life. Once the colony has grown to be self sufficient, the Queen will start the process all over again by producing Princesses and Drones for their own nuptial flights. Therefore, in the strictest sense, a queen ant can not fly. It is only the Princesses and Drones that are able to fly and they do so only once in their lives.

An ant generally lives in a nest/colony made up of several hundred to several thousand ants. Some colonies have been found to have millions of ants. Most Ants have one large ant called a queen ant who lays all of the eggs. The vast majority of Ants in a nest are workers and they are female The only males are the ones that fly out of the nest and mate with a young queen ant so that she can start her own colony. Some ant colonies will have more than one queen. These are the nests that are really large. Most nests are found in the ground though some have been found in walls of buildings and in tree trunks. Really, ants can build a nest just about anywhere.
