Red squirrels are found in Britain, primarily in the northernmost areas. Unfortunately, due to a pox carried by grey squirrels, the red squirrel population has decreased dramatically, leading the species to be officially classed as 'endangered'.
there is a British squirrel called the red squirrel, it is native only to Great Britain.
In Britain, there are two species: the red (native) squirrel, and the grey (American) squirrel.
There are two distinct species of red squirrel. The American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) is found over much of North America. Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is found across much of Europe and northern Asia.
The American grey squirrel was brought into Britain and has killed off most of the red squirrels. They cant compete with the more adaptable grey squirrel. Also their habitat is being destroyed.
The Red squirrel is a member of the squirrel family with approximately forty sub species. Sometimes they do. Indeed there is a whole genus called pine squirrels living in North America. It has three species of squirrels: the American red squirrel, the Douglas squirrel and Mearns squirrel. The American red squirrel should not be confused with the European squirrel.
There are no wild bears in Ireland. Bears would only be found in zoos. The last bears died out in Ireland in the 10th century due to over hunting by the Vikings, probably to make themselves some nice warm clothes.
It is thought that they came from The Carolinas, but did very well here, as well as Britain where it has almost replaced the Red Squirrel.

Some factors that have contributed in the decrease if red squirrels are:- -Grey squirrels are immune to a disease called 'poxvirus' or more commonly known as 'Squirrel Pox' where as red squirrels are not and it causes the red squirrel or 'Fox Squirrel' to die out. -When grey squirrels were introduced many red squirrels were in britain, but now because the population of grey squirrel is far greater than that of the red squirrel, when the two types of squirrels compete for food, shelter etc, the grey squirrel will always come out on top - If you get what I mean :p That's about all I've got at the moment! Hope it helped some of you guys! Mod Joshy x
