Unlike Japan California's' continental shelf is very steep and almost acts like a drop off when you get far enough out. Most of a Tsunamis power is below the surface so If a Tsunami were to approach California It would lose a great deal of energy as it hit the shelf and the remaining would still need to travel almost 30 miles until it reached the coast at the longest near San Fransisco and 10 miles until it reached the coast near Cambria at the smallest.
So could a Tsunami happen in California?
If it was significantly stronger than the recent one that hit Japan than yes and the force that created such a strong wave would also create another Tsunami that would wipe the island country off the map.
Tsunami do strike the Americas. The Mega tsunami that has been over hyped recently has lost some of its credence lately. The Canary Islands may have a landslide, yes, but the result, a 1000 foot wave on the eastern seaboard, has been down played in recent scientific conclusions.
Yes, though when, there is no way of knowing. Try contacting local weather experts for more info, though it is inevitable that a tsunami will happen some time somewhere. One may be even going on right now as I type this, and as you read this answer.
