It appears to be more complicated than that, but yes, wild animals seem to have an instinctive fear of people. Dogs (who are biologically regarded as a subspecies of wolves) have had that instinct largely bred out of them... some recent research on foxes in Russia indicates this may have taken a relatively short time (by the tenth generation, they had developed foxes that actively sought out the companionship of people and were "friendly" as opposed to simply not avoiding people).
