Question: Why is alcohol forbidden in Islam? Answer: Intoxicants were forbidden in the Qur'an through several separate verses revealed at different times over a period of years. At first, it was forbidden for Muslims to attend to prayers while intoxicated (4:43). Then a later verse was revealed which said that alcohol contains some good and some evil, but the evil is greater than the good (2:219). This was the next step in turning people away from consumption of it. Finally, "intoxicants and games of chance" were called "abominations of Satan's handiwork," intended to turn people away from God and forget about prayer, and Muslims were ordered to abstain (5:90-91). (Note - the Qur'an is not arranged chronologically, so later verses of the book were not necessarily revealed after earlier verses.) Muslims interpret these verses in total to forbid any intoxicating substance -- whether it be wine, beer, gin, whiskey, or whatever. The result is the same, and the Qur'an outlines that it is the intoxication, which makes one forgetful of God and prayer, which is harmful. Over the years, the list of intoxicating substances has come to include more modern street drugs and the like. The Prophet Muhammad also instructed his followers, at the time, to avoid any intoxicating substances -- (paraphrased) "if it intoxicates in a large amount, it is forbidden even in a small amount." For this reason, most observant Muslims avoid alcohol in any form, even small amounts that are sometimes used in cooking.

Answer 2:
No, the consumption of alcohol is not forbidden in koran. There is in fact no where in koran where it is explicitly defined as such. And, for something to be classified as forbidden in arabic would mean 'haram'. Logically speaking for alcohol to be forbidden would imply that muslims cannot consume medicines either as most contain alcohol. Islamic jurisprudence states very precisely that everything is permissible unless explicitly stated as forbidden in koran. There 3 things explicitly stated as forbidden in koran: swine meat (which is due to health reasons), carrion (which is also due to health reasons), idolatry (which is obvious as that would defeat the purpose in following a monotheistic religion). As you can see from below Koran does not make alcohol forbidden. In fact, it can be inferred that this is another aspect of islamic society where traditions seem to be confused with religion.

Now for the proof where it clearly does not classify as forbidden:

1. They ask thee concerning wine and gambling. Say: "In them is great sin, and some profit, for men; but the sin is greater than the profit." (Al-Baqara; 2:219)

2. And from the fruit of the date palm and the vine, ye get out wholesome drink and food: behold, in this also is a sign for those who are wise. (An-Nahl; 16:67)

3. O ye who believe! Approach not prayers with a mind befogged, until ye can understand all that ye say…. (An-Nisa; 4:43)

4. O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination, Of Satan's handiwork: Eschew such (abomination) that ye may prosper. (Al Maeda; 5:90)

5. Satan's plan is (but) to excite enmity and hatred between you, with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of God, and from prayer: Will ye not then refrain? (Al-Maeda; 5:91)

Quran does not use the word "prohibition" in the context of alcohol (khMr) anytime, anywhere. KhMr is the arabic term used for anything that causes intoxication. In other words, alcohol has not been categorized as "haram" in the Quran. Only three things have been categorized as "haram". These are (a) animals that die of any basis other than being sacrificed ("halal") in the name of Allah, (b) blood of animals and (c) flesh of pigs. As such the reasoning behind every one of these items being categorized as "haram" was medical, especially undercooked pork which causes triganosis. Everything else in Islamic history, vis-a-vis alcohol is assoiciated with either Hadees (Hadith) and Sunat (Sunnah) that has to be taken in context or occurs after the life of the Prophet Mohammad. What is within the bounds of the Quran or Prophet's life is structured as Shariah and what occurs beyond is within the context of Fiqah and the two should not be confused. One has to understand that if the Prophet Mohammad was dealing with an audience that was subpar in intellectual cognition, he would have been forced to use more expressive and descriptive language to explain the need for refrain to that audience. What occurs after the life of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) only has Fiqah and its consequental affects as its context. Islamic history just as the rest of human history is a matter of who wanted what as they dictated frameworks of social control through evolutionary constructs or lack thereof. If Quran is your reference, then this is what the Quran states. Everything that happens after the life of the Prophet Mohammad only has Islamic history and Fiqah as its context. Anything that happens outside the realm of the Quran has no bearing in the context of exegesis.

Now Surah Al-Naba States for paradise:

"Indeed, for the righteous is attainment - Gardens and grapevines
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age
And a full cup [of wine]...."

SAHIH INTERNATIONAL Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?

No. it is not allowed to drink alcohol in Islam (and most probably in other religions).

It is an explicit command in Quran; Muslims holy book that reflects real God words revelation to prophet Muhammad (PBUH); not to drink alcohol. In addition, it is waste of money and health and causes absence of minding and good thinking when drunk.
