Cockatiels and African GreysAbsolutely, but the initial introductions should be slow and monitored. African Greys are known to be quite nippy and will attempt to impose this act upon any newcomers. A firm, but gentle 'No' will eventually get the point across to your parrot. Although they may get along, they should not be placed in the same cage. The difference in size is too great. If the two birds were to get in a fight, the African grey would win and would seriously injure the cockatiel.

Good question. Just like people, birds have their own independent personalities. It would depend on how the two saw each other. The cockatiel might see the bigger Amazon as a threat and the Amazon might find the small bird irritating. On the other hand they may see each other as a companion when their humans aren't around and bond as friends.

I would place them in separate cages in close proximity and see how they communicate. If they try to get at each other through the bars aggressively, then they're no good together. But if they try to get to each other curiously then give them some supervised time together outside the cages. Don't let either invade the cage of the other as they might end up snapping at each other and the Amazon can very easily kill the cockatiel without even intending to.

It greatly depends on the bird. If the birds like each other, than that is that. If they don't...well, best keep them separated. Whatever you do, make sure they have separate cages, and keep an eye on them when they're hanging out together.

A neighbor gave us a green cheek parrot about 4 days ago. I have a cockatiel that I had since she had no feathers, hand feed her, my baby. The neighbor didn't want the bird parrot anymore. The parrot is alot smaller then my cockatiel. They said the parrot was nice, yes it is but it bites from time to time. I give it every other day out time in my room with me. But I'm afraid to let both of them out in the room together. In fear that the parrot will hurt my cockatiel who doesn't bite. I have their cages close together so they can see each other. And I cover them together, they have their own cages. Is it safe to let them out together? And how do I get the parrot to stop biting? He likes a good rub on the neck, then will bite.

As an owner of one, I say they can be nice or mean. They devote to one person. And it also depend on the bird.
