Home Electricity is Alternating Current (AC). AC can be transmitted much longer distances, over much less massive conductors than direct current (DC).

Comment

Actually, d.c. can be transmitted much longer distances, with less massive conductors and lower losses, than a.c! However, the reason that a.c. is more common for transmission and distribution is the ease and efficiency with which its voltage levels can be changed using Transformers. D.C. transmission at high voltage over very long distances is used because it is much more efficient than a.c. transmission, but changing its voltage levels is far more difficult and inefficient compared with a.c.

The electricity supply in UK is definitely AC (Alternating Current). It is produced at a high rated voltage before it is transferred across the country on pylons, and then it is stepped down to 415 volts ac. Before it enters a house it is stepped down to 240 v .

Supply sockets have three holes, one for live , one for neutral and one for the earth safety conductor .

In the US (and, as far as I know, worldwide) electrical outlets supply alternating current. AC has superior transmission characteristics, making it more efficient.

Comment

Actually, d.c. has much superior transmission characteristics compared with a.c. However, it's much easier to increase/decrease the levels of a.c. voltage using transformers.

The best answer is that it is both. However there is still some debate on the subject.

What doaes ac DC stand for?

The two forms of Electricity are AC and DC. AC Stands for Alernating Current and DC stands for Direct Current. AC electricity comes out of the Powerpoint that your computer is probably using and DC electricity is used in 5.1 voltage batteries that probably power your flashlight or toy.

Most diesel generators are designed to produce alternating current (AC) electricity. However, there are some diesel generators that can also produce direct current (DC) electricity with the help of rectifiers or inverters.

Do phones use ac or dc?

Some devices operate on AC and others on DC. Generally, anything that uses mains electricity (120V US, 240V UK) is using AC electricity and things that use batteries or are rechargable like cell phones, ipods, personal CD, use DC electricity.
