No, Cartoons are not good or bad. Sometimes cartoons are used to illustrate qualities that we would like our children to copy, and sometimes they are used to illustrate qualities we would like them to avoid. It is up to the parents to help the child learn which is which.

The issue that often comes up when discussing children watching cartoons usually concerns leaving children alone with cartoons to entertain them, instead of parents spending time with them.

Answer2When parents continually leave their children to be entertained by the television it can have negative effects your child's mind because children are primarily proactive and like to be doing something and televisions offer no physical stimulation like taking them to the playground. Even your child having free play (not controlled and without electronic toys, they have to use imagination) is more beneficial to relying on the television. If a child's neurons are not being stimulated (they are not being required to think things out) which scientific research has showed television clearly does not do and gives a flatlined effect when neuroscientist compare a image of a child's brain watching tv over a more physically involved activity. The best way to help your child create connection from tv is if you get involved with them and explain what their seeing, discuss different scenarios or outcomes, ask questions, compare what your seeing to what she has experienced--like that.

I would have to say yes as a man who grew up in the late fifties and early sixties and saw godzillions of cartoons. some are harmful and in bad taste- there were some, probably no longer aired, which angled off a sort of (social responsibility) streak in a rather frightful or morbid way. These were one-shot cartoons on tv and did not have serial or repeating characters. Plots dealt with Jaywalking and a child lying unconscious or near-dead while his/her irate mother panics and goes(speak to me, Speak to me) In the background perhaps angels and devils duel for the upcoming soul. there were some which very realistically dealt with extreme hazard situation involving child cartoon characters in dire peril- abandoned in hazardous situations, trapped by a (Mean) truant officer, etc/ I can recall one sick (Jappie) which dealt with a cruel junkman staging a metal-scrapping furnace facility as a harmless carnival for pets in the neighborhood! Super-character gets there in time to avoid the Hoolo=zoocaust- they had some pretty frightening cartoons which were never reviewed in the TV Guide or program listings. some may have provoked incredibly dangerous stunts, that's another angle of attack! Somehow the abandonment tactic was most frightening without being actually violent all the more so when involving a child and not some elastic animal character/ I Kid You Not.
