First off, an element is just an element; a chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number, the number of protons in its nucleus (as per wikipedia). An example would be Sodium (Na). This is NOT a compound, nor is it organic.

Carbon is the element that comprises organic compounds. A compound must contain Carbon in order for it to be considered organic.

Organic compounds are compounds that typically are made of Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N) and some will include the Halides [Fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Bromine (Br), and Iodine (I) ].

Note: Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas does not constitute an organic substance, along with carbon monoxide (CO), carbonates and bicarbonates (ie: baking soda, or NaHCO3)
