Trimming a fire door with asbestos...If is truly asbestos and not gypsum or somesuch other material, you may not be allowed to cut or modify the door without special equipment to meet EPA requirements for containment. More than likely, the door is probably made with a gypsum core. When cutting anything where there is a chance of producing dust, a good quality respirator or at least a dust mask should be worn. And please, please, please, realize that asbestos is not poison. It is an irritant. All those "scare your pants off commercials" are for mesothelioma victims. These suffers most likely worked around asbestos for years in very unsafe conditions. Minimal contact with asbestos should be no worse than contact with the early fiberglass and mineral wool insulations found in many homes beginning in the mid 1940's. You should be able to trim this unit, but you will need to seal and cap the cut area with something like an aluminum threshold sweep.
