Best Answer

it is neither it is a herb.

It's a berry that grows on an herb.

Alan Davidson, author of The Oxford Companion to Food, says the word herb at its broadest can mean, "a plant whose green parts (usually leaves, sometimes stalks) are used to flavor food." The banana leaf is used in cooking, most often as a wrap in which foods are cooked, but also to impart flavor. In that context also, the banana (plant) can be considered an herb.

The banana itself is the fruit of the herb - or, in the words of Harold McGee in On Food and Cooking, "a seedless berry of a tree-sized herb related to the grasses..."

Yes, the banana fruit is a berry. Berries are identified as being many seeded with a fleshy inner layer. So, technically a banana is a berry. And, believe it or not, bananas don't grow on trees! Originally from Asia, the "banana tree" is really not a tree in the true sense. In fact, banana plants have no wood fiber. The banana plant is the world's largest herb and a member of the lily family.

A banana is part of the genus Musa (along with plantains). The banana "tree" is actually not a tree at all - the "trunk" is just the base of the leaf stalks, technically making it a large herb.

A berry (botanically) is a simple fruit having seeds and pulp produced from a single inferior or exterior ovary. (Banana's ovary is inferior, meaning tiny petals and other fruit parts appear at the tip.) This makes the banana a berry; however, berries which develop from an inferior ovary are often called epigynous berries (or, false berries).

So, yes and no. :)

Is a Banana a herb or berry?

A banana tree is not actually classified as a tree due to the fact that it has no wood fibers. So it is actually a plant, IE: Herb. A berry is an indehiscent fruit with two or more seeds and a fleshy pericarp, which is exactly what a banana is. This is not a debate it is fact that bananas are berries. But of course most will argue just as most debated that avocados are veggies and not a fruit which we all know now they are actually a type of fruit
