The battle of Lookout Mountain was a part of the Third Battle of Chattanooga, that fought on Nov. 24, 1863, when Union Gen. Hooker attacked eastward between the Tennessee River and Lookout Mountain.
Hooker'smen found the Confederate position weakly guarded, so that they succeeded in climbing it and sweeping the enemy off Lookout Mountain.
Some time later this action was called ,the "Battle above the Clouds".

Around the same day as the beginning of the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, the Yankee Army from Chattanooga began to move southeast toward Atlanta, in the west. By then Longstreet had been recalled with his First Corps to rejoin Lee's Army in Virginia.
