Beer has a shelf life of about 12 months. Even if it has passed the 12 months the beer isn't necessarily unhealthy for you either, it just may taste a little "skunky" or stale. From personal experience, I saved a SweetWater Festive Ale for about 10 months and it still tasted perfectly fine. I also noticed when I've home-brewed aging my beer for a month or so has actually improved the beer a lot, as opposed to when it was still in it's infancy.
There are no healthy advantages of an unhealthy diet. An unhealthy diet is an unhealthy diet.
The early colonists drank most of the healthy things we have today (water, milk). They (especially the men) drank much more alcohol than most people do today. Beer, wine, and rum were the most common alcoholic drinks.

Yes, other forms of alcohol other than wine have generally the same benefits when used sensibly. A beer a day keeps the doctor away. The only problem is a friend of mine told me he is keeping 12 doctors away!
