I think the definiton of nerd is not one of absoloute geekiness or that someone is incredibly smart. Nerds in my opinion are people of greater intellectual abilities than the 'jocks' and most importantly people who will not succumb to the demand of being popular. Therefore people who call you nerd are merely complimenting you on your willpower and your intellectual abilties and they think that they're insulting you.
