It can be charactarized as both. A lot of people do it as an activity and a hobby, but the USBC (United States Bowling Congress) hosts a lot of tournaments typically for kids/teens, but they have adult leagues, as well. They also have these things called "Sport Shots" and "Patterns." It poses as a challenge for most bowlers who throw a hook of some sort because if you were to go to some random bowling alley, you would be bowling on something called a "House Shot." Sport Shots and Patterns have different oil patterns, which causes the bowling ball to react and hook differently. There are about 15 different USBC/PBA patterns. USBC and PBA (Pro Bowlers Association) uses these Patterns for local and national tournaments, which as I stated before, poses a challenge to a lot of bowlers who compete on them. Since that's the case, that could make Bowling a sport, as well as an activity.
