Calamine lotion is usually safe with few to no side effects when used topically. If you notice irritation when applying topically, discontinue use. If you notice severe but rare side effects, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue, or hives, contact your doctor immediately. Calamine lotion should not be ingested. The lotion contains zinc oxide which can be toxic if swallowed. Symptoms include diarrhea, chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, irritation of the mouth and throat, and yellowing of the eyes or skin. If you, or anyone you know, swallows calamine lotion, call 911 immediately for medical attention.
