usually, no. even historically, common methods of execution were meant to be quick and as painless as possible. hanging, done right, is so quick you are dead before any pain could register. lethal injection uses Sodium thiopental as an anesthetic.
however, there are examples, both historical and modern, of executions gone wrong. from hangings going on until strangulation, to men being lit on fire while screaming in the electric chair, all the way to violent fits induced by the drugs of lethal injection.
