Well it depends, Fire beats grass grass beats water and water beats fire, i started with chimchar and he is pretty good . after finishing the game trade all your legendaries to another version of pokemon, wipe the game try a different starter and trade the legendaries back
Also, Chimchar is a good choice due to the lack of fire types in Pokemon DP.
