Civilization IV is a TBSG (or turn-based strategy game). In it every player would take turns moving or giving commands to each of their active pieces (such as say a scout or a tank). When you finish moving all your pieces your turn is over and the next civilization goes (this being a computer this goes very quickly). Every turn your cities obtain more food in their storage, are closer to finishing whatever they are building while scientists are closer to researching that technology and your workers are closer to finishing that road, irrigation or other improvement.
The game CIV 4 is set in 4000 BC. It's an Ancient Historical game and the player is a settler who starts off building a single city, before expanding it into a full empire.
