There actually isn't which is pretty sad for that theory. Mainly because alot of people don't react to any drug therapy when it is felt psychological issues are relatively well resolved or if there is none any way. But there are many coincidences that depressed people feel better after taking antidepressants, even in placebo tests.

Why do psychatrists assume someone has a mental problem if they are depressed?

Psychiatrists don't make assumptions when it comes to a diagnosis, at least not reputable psychiatrists. If a person has a severe or ongoing depression, they do have a problem. The label 'mental problem' is not a medical term. Clinical depression and other mental illnesses are caused by chemistry of the brain. Depression is no more a 'mental problem' than is type 1 diabetes, it's a dysfunction. Most people have depression occasionally, but when depression is chronic or constant, it affects the individuals function, behavior, and emotions. Clinical depression causes a great deal of worry and fear for the people close to the person. Clinical depression is life threatening and should not be taken lightly or ignored.

What is a cure for depression?

1. Reactive depression is caused entirely by situational factors. Counselling - no medicines - results in cure. 2. Endogenous or Clinical Depressive Disorder is caused by disturbance in neurotransmission in the brain. This has no cure. It can go into remission by itself when the person is free from depression, but can have recurrence. Medicines and treatments like electroconvulsive therapy bring remarkable improvement in most people. For prevention of relapse maintenance dose of antidepressants and cognitive behavior therapy can be effective. The person with Major Clinical Depressive Disorder can be symptomfree, but is not cured.(Like diabetes and hypertension)

You are depressed what can you do about it?

Go see a counselor if its clinical or something more they may prescribe something. but usually if depression is caused by an event in life its not clinical depression.Or...try to think why are you depressed. What's causing it? Maybe something seriously bothers you in your life but you're afraid to admit that? If you manage to identify and remove that cause, your depression will probably fade, although it will not be easy.
