Best Answer

Yes, it is a nut, same as the banana. Anything with a shell, or peeling that is not consumed by human are considered in the Nut Family.

Fruits you eat the entire fruit, even the seeds inside. Only fruit that have shells (rinds) are the melon family.

Botanically the coconut (meaning the fruit) is a drupe, not a true nut. Like other fruits it has three layers: exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp. The exocarp and mesocarp together make up the husk, and the mesocarp is composed of fibers called coir. Coconuts sold in the shops of non-tropical countries often have had the husk removed. The endocarp or shell is the hardest part of the coconut. The shell has three germination pores (stoma) or eyes that are clearly visible on its outside surface once the husk is removed.

Does a coconut have seeds?

Short Answer: Yes. Many people mistake that the coconut is a fruit but when the coconut is "born" is has many qualities of a fruit. Many people may also mistake the coconut as a nut but as the coconut matures it gains nut properties. Surprisingly the coconut is a seed. The coconut tree, Cocos nucifera, produces a nut that is the fruit of the tree and also the seed. Each nut will produce one seedling in favourable conditions.
