Windows Vista uses the standard Win32 libraries (or Win64 on x64 edition which is reverse-compatible anyway) so what runs on older Windows should run OK on Windows Vista unless it is something specific like a professional application. If you have trouble playing Generals on Vista, Vista has a compatibility mode.
You would probably have to buy Command and Conquer: The First Decade. It has every CNC game that plays on the PC from Command and Conquer - CNC Generals: Zero Hour. It was made to play all of these games on XP, so you should have no problem with that.
Halo 2 is made for Vista to get us customers switch to Vista instead of using XP.
