Well glass may be an over simplification. Glass is amorphous meaning that it is just like a blob of jelly whereas CZ is crystalline meaning that internally it is structured and displays discreet optical properties.
Nevertheless it is man-made. It was made by the Russians in an attempt to further their studies in LASER during the 1970's. Its usage as a diamond simulant grew after people realised it looked a lot like diamond too!
