Douglas fir - like all firs - is a softwood."Softwood" is actually a term that is used to classify all the conifers while "hardwood" is used as a classification for all angiosperm trees. In terms of actual "hardness", density or mechanical strength, the "softwoods" overlap the "hardwoods" with the hardest softwoods being harder than the softest hardwoods. The average hardness for hardwoods is harder than the average hardness of softwoods. Douglas fir in particular is definitely softer than most hardwoods.

A cedar is a conifer therefore is classified as a softwood.

The actual hardness or density of the wood has little to do with the classification. - Generally if a tree is an angiosperm (bearing broad leaves and flowers) , then it's a hardwood. If it has needles or cones it's usually a softwood.

Cypress trees are conifers, i.e., softwoods, but unlike most American softwoods, these trees are deciduous in that they shed foliage in the fall like hardwoods. The only other softwood that does that is larch (also called tamarack).
