In the UK, the Liberal Democrats are a political party. The Lib Dems, as they are nicknamed, won about 10% of the seats in Parliament and 20% of the popular vote in the previous election. They formed a Coalition Government after the Conservatives won the largest number of seats but failed to win a majority.
The Liberal Democrats stand in between the Labour and Conservative parties, supporting the welfare state but not the "nanny state", supporting the environment and the EU, supporting a free economy and government investment in public services. They also support electoral reform, to allow them to be better represented, and reforming the House of Lords into an elected chamber.
