Best Answer

A diamond is a mineral composed of carbon crystallized at extremely high temperatures and pressures; in nature, diamonds form 150 to 200 kilometers (93 to 124 miles) or more below the earth's surface.

Another Answer

Diamond mineral appears to be a rock until it is processed. Only 20% of all diamonds mined qualify as gem-quality; the remainder are easily mistaken for ordinary 'rocks'.
