Diamond is an ELEMENT.

It is NEITHER a compound NOR a mixture.

Diamond is a molecule composed of only the atoms of carbon , in a very specific arrangement.

In diamond, any one carbon atom is combined to four adjacent carbon atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement (like methane).

This tetrahedral arrangement tesselates to become a diamond ( that you can hold). This arramngement of carbon atoms is known as the 'Adamantine' structure.

It is also one of the three ALLOTROPES of Carbon. The others being graphite and Buckminster Fullerene(Footballene).

NB Do NOT confuse the words 'Allotrope' with 'Isotope'. They have totally different meanings.
