Dry ice is the solid form (state of matter) of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Under normal circumstances, it will change state from a solid directly to a gas. It does this without melting (changing state to a liquid). We call the direct transformation of a solid to a gas sublimation, and dry ice is said to sublime when going directly from its solid state to a gas.

Is dry ice a liquid?

Dry ice is not a liquid. It is a solid form of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide changes from a gas to a solid at low temperatures, under pressure.

Would dry ice function the same way as liquid nitrogen in the balloon experiment?

No, because dry ice is a solid and you cannot place a solid inside a solid. If it was liquid carbon dioxide (as opposed to dry ice, solid carbon dioxide) then it would behave similarly.

How did dry ice get its name?

It is called "dry" because when heat is given, it sublimes (turns from a solid into a gas). This is different from actual ice that turns from a solid to a liquid. It is called "ice" because solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) is very cold, similar to ice.

List three substances that you have experienced in at least two physical states?

MatterWater... it exists as a gas (steam), a liquid (water) and solid (ice).

Can a solid change states?

yes a solid can hange states, ice can melt (liquid) and dry ice (solid) 'melts' into a gas

Why is solid carbon dioxide is called dry ice?

That's precisely what it's made of. "Regular" ice is made of solid water, also known as H2O. Dry ice is made of solid CO2. If you meant to ask that question backwards, solid CO2 is called dry ice because CO2 in its standard state at room temperature is a gas, unlike water, which is a liquid, therefore "dry ice" evaporates and leaves no liquid.

What is the most common state of dry ice?

Dry ice is nothing but the solid CO2 , When CO2 is compressed under high pressure, it first come to liquid state and when more pressure is applied on it, it becomes solid. This solid is called as Dry Ice. Thus we can say that dry ice in solid state

What solid can be turn into a gas but not a liquid?

Dry Ice, also known as Solid Carbon Dioxide

What is the common name for dry ice?

Dry ice IS the solid form of carbon dioxide. And "dry ice" IS the common name for the solid CO2. So the question should be "What substance is the common name Dry Ice used for ? "

What states can dry ice be found in?

Solid. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide( what you mainly breath out) , it is like asking: what states are there for steam? Steam is defined as water as a gas, the same kind of thing is with dry ice exept it's a solid for carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide can be solid, liquid or gas, the solid is made by making the gas a liquid by compression then to a solid by freezing.

What is the phase change involving no liquid?

sublimation. an example would be dry ice. dry ice changes from a solid to a gas without going through the liquid phase.
