1. Candidates and parties with a lot of money may not be sure of their victory but enjoy a great and unfair advantage over smaller parties and independents.
2. In some parts of the country, candidates with criminal connections have been able to push others but of the electoral race and to secure a ticket from major parties.
3. Some families tend to donate political parties, tickets are contributed to relatives from these families.
4. Very often elections offer little choice to ordinary citizens, for both the major parties are quite similar to each other both in policies and practice.
5. Smaller parties and independent candidates suffer a huge disadvantage compared to bigger parties.
Yes, elections in India are generally considered to be free and fair. It is often cited as an example of a developing country where democracy works. The elections are vibrant, and power has been peacefully transferred from one party to another, repeatedly.
That being said, the elections in india are not without their fair share of problems and scandals. These are usually limited considering the sheer scale of indian elections.
The Main Challenges to Democracy
Although democracy has been accepted as the best form of Government in the modern world. Yet it has its own problems. Some of these are as under:
(i) Growing economic and social inequalities among the people:
The most important problem in democracy is the growing social and economic inequality among the people. Although all the citizens have the right to vote and fight elections only rich people have a chance to win the election.
The poor are sometimes even forced to sell their votes to fulfill their basic necessities of life like food, clothing and shelter. So rich people are elected representatives in the legislature who make laws and frame policies which favour them.
(ii) Role of anti-social elements:
The role of anti-social elements has increased very much during the elections. Voters are coerced to vote for a particular candidate or party. Rigging also takes place during the elections.
(iii) Corruption and inefficiency:
In many democratic countries of the world, political leaders and government officials are corrupt, dishonest and inefficient. As a result, people do not take interest in elections and have no faith in government officials. This affects the working of democracy in the country very badly.
(iv) Casteism and communalism:
Are other big challenges in many democratic countries like India? During elections, a large number of voters give weight to the caste and religion of the candidate. Political parties also keep in mind the caste or religion of a person while distributing tickets for the election. Representatives elected on the basis of caste or religion work for the welfare of the people belonging only to their caste or religion.
For the successful working of democracy in the country, it is necessary that the elections must be free and fair. Voters should be able to cast their votes freely without any fear and according to their own choice.
There should be no coercion or allurement to make them vote for a particular candidate or party. Rigging in the elections should be strictly checked. Use of money and muscle power should not win the election. Only the candidates who have popular support should win the election.
Following are the different measures taken to ensure free and fair elections in India:
(a) Election commission:To make sure that elections are free and fair, the Constitution of India provides for an Election Commission. It consists of a Chief Election Commissioner and some other members
(b) Preparation and revision of electoral rolls:For the conduct of elections, electoral rolls are prepared for each constituency of State Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha. To ensure that no voter is left out, electoral rolls are revised before each election.
(c) Control of election commission over the election staff:The Election Commission exercises control over all the functionaries connected with the conduct of election.
(e) Check on the misuse of official machinery:Steps have been taken to check the misuse of official machinery during elections by the members of the ruling party.
(f) Identity cards for voters:To check bogus voting and impersonation identity cards have been issued to the voters.
(g) Election petition:After the election, if any candidate or a voter feels that irregularities have taken place or corrupt practices have been adopted in the election, he can file petition in a court of law.
The biggest challenge that we are facing today is the vote bank politics enacted nicely by the politicians. Each one of the netas want to hold on to their dear chair and will do anything to gain it back every time. For this they use either caste politics and will stoop to any level.
The greatest challenge we are still facing is the loss of nationality feeling in Indians. We do not feel proud to be an Indian. Even the armed forces are treated as a profession and not a passion. Once we imbibe nationality feeling i.e we are Indians, we live in India and we are working for the betterment of our motherland, automatically the corruption, illegal activities, laziness etc will be overcome and we can make our country a better one.

This includes practices such as voter suppression, ballot tampering, or coercive tactics aimed at influencing the outcome of the election. In a genuinely free and fair election, the process would be transparent, inclusive, and uphold the principles of democracy.
