As Young Link go to the ranch and learn "Epona's" song from the little girl there (what was her name again?) Then, as an adult, go back to the Ranch. Pay to ride the horses, then play "Epona's Song" to call Epona over. Do this procedure again and you should be challenged to a horse race by Ido. Win the race (then win it again), and the horse is yours! You'll have to jump over the gate to escape the ranch at the end of this sequence of events. Just make sure Epona is facing the fence straight on, then go toward the gate fast (i.e. slapping Epona). You should jump right over. Whenever you get back to Hyrule field later in the game after a dungeon or something, just play "Epona's song," and she'll always come back to you. I know that's not a thorough answer, but it's the best I can remember right now. Hopefully it's better than no answer at all :-)

You then go back to Lon Lon Ranch as an adult. You pay Milo (I believe that is his name, it has been years since I have played this game) the money to ride a horse around. You then play Epona's song, this will cause Epona to come to you allowing you to ride her. You race around the field jumping over a few fences, and doing some laps. You then talk to Milo while riding Epona. He will make a comment about how you are doing well, and he will challenge you to a race. You race him the first time and beat him. He will then offer to race you again, this time he will give you the horse if you win. After you win, he will notice you are on Epona and will get a bit angry since he was saving it for Ganon. He will then lock you into pen, all you have to do now is jump over the fence, not the fence he is blocking a fence on the other side. And congratulations you have yourself a new horse.
