Technically, it could be either. "Evangel" means "good news" or "a messenger bringing good news" (eu-, good; angel, - messenger). It's the same as "gospel" (go-, good; spell, report). While we normally find it used to refer to the Good News of Christian salvation, it would be proper (grammatically, at least) to use it for relating a wonderful discovery from any kind of religion.
