Some are just pure fantasy and those are debatable. If it's a story that has a powerful message, then it's not a waste of time. (IMO) Look at 1984, Fahrenheit 451, stories like the lottery, etc. Some of these are required reading in many institutions who feel they have something to say.
Reading is never a waste of time -- the more you read, the smarter you become.
