Fighting can be a noun, a verb, or an adjective depending on its use in a sentence.

It depends on the context of the sentence. Eg. "he came out fighting" the verb is "came (past tense of to come). So fighting adds more information the verb. So it could be argued it is an adverb in this case even though it is a verb itself.
