A fistula is often caused by infection due to mechanical damage although there are other causes. Untreated injuries that become infected and have a tract (fistula) that permits drainage of pus and contaminants from the injury can relieve pressure from a wound or abscess revealing the need for treatment.

The fistula itself is an indication of an underlying issue which may or may not be dangerous.
