It depends on where you live. In the UK, they are synonymous. "Wool" means wool yarn, and cotton wool means cotton yarn. In the US, wool is the fiber of a sheep and yarn is strands of fiber twisted (spun) into a long string that can be woven, knit, or crocheted.

Simply explained, polyester is a man-made fiber. DuPont had a patent on this fiber in the 20th Century.

Fleece refers to a finishing of a fabric. Fleece, by definition is considered to be soft, cozy to the touch and a bit fluffy.

A fleece finish can be applied to a polyester fabric as well as a cotton fabric. If you think about the classic grey heather sweatshirt, the inside has a "fleece" finish.

Hope this helps!

A fleece of wool is the natural insulation of a sheep, made up of the soft downy fibers that grow from the animal's skin. Wool fleeces are known for their warmth and breathability, making them a popular choice for cold-weather clothing and blankets.

Fleece is the raw material from which wool is cleaned, carded and spun. One is not necessarily better than the other, per se.
