Tongue piercings can cause gum/enamel erosion, both of which are irreversible. However, this can be avoided/helped by positioning the piercing correctly and wearing proper jewelry. Its also possible to chip your teeth on the ball- this can be helped by wearing acrylic balls. Of course, there are the same risks that come with any piercing- infection, scarring. So while tongue piercings can cause problems, there are ways to handle said problems, so its just a matter of if you're willing to take care of that and be prepared if you do encounter problems.
