It depends on what is causing the pain. I have RA and this can cause inflammation which is painful For this I find that cold for a short time can help. However as a result of theinflammation I also have problems similar to osteoarthritis and in that situation there is nothing better then letting hot water run offer the affected joint.

It all depends on the individual sometimes the best relief can be gained by alternating between heat and cold.

It can but then in some cases so does cold, sometimes heat and cold intermittently is helpful.
