No. But the author based it on basic lives that foundling girls would have had, then added detail to , make it look like a girls life. Everything that happened to Hetty would have happened to a foundling girl.

For instance, Hetty gets fostered until she's 6, then goes back to the Foundling Hospital. The she leaves to become a servant when she is 14. This is the basic outline of the story and every foundling girl would have done the same.
