I have two Master's Degrees, a California Clear Teaching Credential, and a National Teaching Credential. I've been a classroom teacher for over twenty years in the public schools. I firmly believe that a dedicated parent of at least average intelligence can do a better job educating their own children than sending them to public school.
The reason is we teachers spend a great deal of our time just on discipline. In a classroom setting it is very difficult for young children to stay focused on the lesson concept. Add to that sick days and distracting assemblies, announcements, and other interruptions and it is easy to waste about one-half of the instructional time on non-instruction. It can be an emotional disaster if your child gets a unqualified or uncaring teacher.
Parents know their children better than even the most caring and dedicated teachers could ever hope. Plus, if your child is sick the day doesn't have to be a total waste since parents can direct children in educational opportunities at home.
The downfall of nearly every home schooled child that I am aware of is m
ost parents do not have the dedication and stamina to teach their child six hours a day, 180 days a year. Most start out well, but get distracted by life and gradually the children receive less and less schooling until the whole endeavor becomes a joke.
Parents who try to home school their own children much past the fourth or fifth grade may need extensive training as the curricula becomes more complicated - especially the math! There may be some benefit for your child to hear different points of view from the many different teachers over the years. Plus, you may not want your child to miss out on the lessons learned from the social interactions with his/her peers. Remember we don't live and work in a vacuum as adults. Your child will need to know how to get along with others - even those who are hard to get along with.
If you intend to home school your child in California then you are required by the state to have a teaching credential. Other states may not have this rule. Most districts will provide books, testing, and guidance if you home school. Your taxes pay for it anyway - you might as well take advantage of it.
It can be very fun and good.
It can be very fun and good not only for you but for your whole family. Home school is a great way to bond more with your family and have a great relationship that will last forever. Some people say that public school is better because kids get to be around "the world". But I think the most important thing that should be prioritized is being around "the family". Friends and popularity are nice but will they last very long? Your family is there 24/7 for you and it's important to be connected with each other. Home school is a great way to bond and get that long lasting relationship with your family members. -Walker201013 :)

In my point of view learning how to start home schooling your child may feel awkward at first, but as the days pass, the feeling will quickly fade. Soon, you will look back and see the progress you have made and realize that home schooling is really quite easy " it just takes a little time and consistency. If you decide to home school mid school year because of a bad school experience, you will want to take a couple additional steps as you begin home schooling your child.
