The source of hydroelectricity is the potential energy stored in water at higher elevations. This potential energy is converted to kinetic energy as the water falls through the piping leading to the turbines in the dam. The turbines convert the water's kinetic energy into mechanical energy and turn the generators which convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy. So you see there are actually four types of energy involved in the production of hydroelectricity.

What a water able a hydroelectric dam have kinetic energy or potential energy?

The raised water, which stores the energy, has gravitational potential energy. While it is moving, the water has kinetic energy.

How does energy change forms as it goes from behind a dam to downstream of a dam?

potential energy that converts to kinetic energy

Is hydroelectric tidals potential or kinetic?

kinetic

How does a hydroelectric dam change the type of energy?

There are several. Gravitational potential energy is transformed into linear kinetic energy, which is then transformed into rotational kinetic energy, which is then transformed into electrical energy.

Is hydroelectric energy kinetic energy?

Potential energy, because the energy in this process is produced through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.

What are the energy changes that take place in a hydroelectric power station?

gravitational potential energy in the reservoir to kinetic energy in the water (when it's travel through the pipes) to kinetic energy in the turbine to electrical energy in the generator

What are the two types of mechanical energy?

Potential energy and kinetic energy. mechanical energy is the energy of motion(kinetic energy)or the potential of motion(potential energy) so i would say-kinetic and potential energy

Is hydroelectric energy is an example of using a kinetic energy?

Water is stored behind a dam and possesses potential energy. When it is released and made to run down conduits down the dam to turn turbines the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy which in turn is converted to electrical energy.

What are the two main forms of energy?

The two main forms of energy are Kinetic energy and Potential Energy. Kinetic energy is motion energy. Potential energy is energy stored in matter.

What device changes gravitational potential to kinetic energy?

The free fall of the object in gravitational field changes its gravitational potential energy to kinetic energy

Is hydorelectric renewable?

hydroelectric energy is renewable. it's generated by waterfalls and dams. They convert the gravitational potential energy of the water into kinetic energy that turns a turbine of a generator.
