Not especially; hydroelectric power has been in use for 150 years or so. But it isn't exactly the "power of the past", because hydroelectric power will be needed far into the future. Even if we had some cheap and reliable power source like fusion, we'd still need to have dams on many rivers to control rainwater runoff and prevent floods.
So, call hydro the "power of the present" - because our current civilization gets a LOT of electricity from hydro.
