Inbreeding (crossing close relatives like siblings or a parent to an offspring) reduces the genetic diversity of the species and propagates genetic mutations and diseases in the species. Over time, the genetic issues pile up until the offspring are no longer viable - they either do not survive gestation to birth or die prior to reproducing themselves.
