It extremely easy because all you do is open a small lid on the systems left side (its impossible to not see it) and inside of that you need to screw a simple screw that holds the hdd tray. Then you just take it out and unscrew 4 screws that are on the side, and the drive should be removed. Then you mount the new drive on the tray and reverse the process bye screwing it back. I did my in 20 min because its better to use more time than to make a large mistake and later regret.

time to buy a new HDD for the PS3. I've had this problem before and I took the HDD out of the PS3 and was testing it in a PC, found a bunch of bad sectors. Bought a new HDD from Tigerdirect.com and it totally fixed the issue.
