Mercury (Hg++) is denser because its atomic structure has more mass per volume than water. Mercury is also a metal. Mercury freezes at -38.9°C (234K) and boils at 356.58°C (630K). So we see it in liquid form in most cases. Most metals are denser than water, and Mercury is a metal.

where as the Water has bonding between the two hydrogen and one oxygen atom and so on clumping molecules with each other and hence forming weak bonds density reduces. water freezes at 32o Fahrenheit (F) and boils at 212o F, its the best solvent.

even though mercury is a liquid at room temperature it is a metal so because of its metallic bonding its structure is more compact than water. Water is a simple molecular compound and its particles are not as compact as mercury.
