The word it's is a contraction, a shortened form of the pronoun "it" and the verb "is".

The contractions it's functions as the subject and verb(or auxiliary verb) of a sentence or a clause.

The pronoun its (no apostrophe) is a possessive adjective, a word placed before a noun to describe that noun as belonging to a thing.

Examples:

I think it is time to go. Or: I think it's time to go. (contraction)

Look at the clock. Both its hands are on the twelve. (the pronoun its describes the noun handsas belonging to the clock)
