Added comment: 'worshipping statues' is certainly against Christian (although some Roman Catholic practices come close), Jewish and Muslim theology, but other religions appear to disagree. I assume that Buddhists, Hindus and others which appear to worship statues are, in fact, only regarding the statue as a representation of the god they believe in, which isn't really much different from Christian churches which have a crucified Jesus at 'the business end' of their churches.

I agree with the above statement, though I do ask myself, do people actually worship the statue or what the statue represents. No one has seen Christ but there are many interpretations by artists of what Christ may have looked like.
Statues I believe give the worshiper something to focus upon. Though to close ones eyes and use the mind to focus on the prayer rather than on what God looks like is perhaps more acceptable to God.
