Is it bad if you kill someone?

the death penalty is a form of punishment, yes but why should people with athority kill some one who had made a mistake? the death penalty is bad because if one person kills one person and that person is killed by athority its just as bad as when the person being killed by athority. but its also 3 times worse because athority has killed hundreds of people, so there for they are abusing the right of athority

Killing someone is VERY bad. First of all, you do not let them live. How would you like it if someone killed you? For example, in "The Giver" by Lois Lowry, there is release, which is the killing of babies and elders if they don't fit into the community. If they hadn't been released, they would've at least been able to live a life. They don't get to experience life. How do the people know if the baby is going to help the community, a lot, one day. Well, then that's too bad. The chance has gone, by killing the person/ baby. This is how killing someone is bad.

Like all things in life outside the realm of pure theory, there are NO absolutes. Killing is not always bad. However, this question is not asking that, but is rather two related topics: "Why should I consider the act of killing a person bad?" and, "I've killed someone (for whatever reason). How can this be bad for me?" Note the categories this is placed in: not "Morality and Ethics", but "Philosophy" and "Psychology".

The first intended question is a philosophical one: "Why should we consider the act of killing a person bad?" In the broader sense, killing a person can be thought of as a sense of self-inflicted damage, as killing anyone in society lowers the value of life, and thus makes it more possible that you might be killed (in the aspect that it becomes more "permissible" to kill). Killing a person also deprives the society (and, you, indirectly) from the possible future contributions of that person's labor or industry, and may also cause a burden to be placed onto society, in the manner of costs for supporting victims and dealing with (in whatever manner) the killer.

The second question is psychological: "How does killing adversely affect my state of mind?" As numerous post-traumatic stress studies have shown, in any context, killing a person takes a psychological toll on the human mind. In one way, it seems that humans are hard-wired to suffer ill psychological effects from killing other humans - anything from sleeplessness, to nightmares, to changes in sleep patterns, altered social interaction, excessive nervousness, inability to concentrate, to a myriad of other mental disorders. Sufficient training (and often, intense psychotherapy) can counter these effects, or buffer the individual from them, but overall, humans cannot kill others without suffering some negative psychological damage. Two different extreme cases - the soldier and the serial killer - mass killing permanently and noticeably alters the mind's chemical and neurological balance.

Because, by definition, it means taking another human life without justification. Killing another person is a terrible thing, and when it's done for no good reason, it's just that much worse.

Well I think that murder is ok as long as it's committed on a Tuesday afternoon.

Not on every occasion. It is sometimes necessary to do so.

In self defence or defence of ones home or country for instance.

It should also be noted that there is a difference between killing someone and murder. All killings are not murder.

Murder is killing someone illegally and as in the cases above not all killings are illegal.

I personally feel killing is not good, but people seem to find soldiers killing other soldiers quite all right, for some reason.
