It isn't really bad, but it does reduce how effective they are. The soap will wash away most of the softener. It is much more effective when it is added during the rinse cycle, as intended.

I wash mine in the washer on gentle cycle with just a tiny bit of detergent and add fabric softener to the rinse, then put it in the dryer until it's dry. I only use cotton or polyester batting.
